Youth council

The Hurunui Youth Council (HYC) aims to encourage young people to get involved in community affairs and events. HYC members meet monthly to discuss issues that affect young people in the Hurunui District, gain valuable skills and learn about local government. The HYC contributes to Hurunui District Council decision-making by providing a youth perspective, and a youth voice on relevant issues. HYC members also meet other youth from around the Hurunui District, as well as Waimakariri and Selwyn districts, and have further leadership development opportunities.

Hurunui Youth Council members meet every three weeks on Mondays 4.30-6.30pm. There are bimonthly formal meetings in the Hurunui District Council Chambers in Amberley, with two workshops in between at alternating libraries around the district. Check out the video below to get a glimpse into what the Hurunui Youth Council gets up to!

Hi, I'm Jaime Simmonds.

I am a very bubbly year ten student who attends Amuri Area School and I live in a peaceful town called Rotherham. Although it may look like there is nothing exciting to do in these small towns, you can always count on there being an HYP event just around the corner! This is my first year being part of the team that coordinates these events and I am thrilled to be on the Hurunui Youth Programme committee. I joined HYP so I can connect with more people, gain more knowledge about the district and give back to our community.

Let’s start this year off with a bang!

Hey Guys! Jade is my name, I attend Hurunui College currently as an Yr11. I am very proud to be a part of HYP, I love being a part of a team that seek what the youth in our district need and push to do something about it. One of my favourite things to do is have fun and make sure others are having the same. I adore sports, appreciate the outdoors and enjoy time with friends. I think it is important that the young people of Hurunui get a voice and bloody awesome that we have a way to hear them. My aim for this year is to connect with the young people to make sure I am representing us right and to make sure our youth know about us so they can get involved and join in on our fun.
